Executive Function Support
At Freitas Tutoring, we recognize that academic success is about more than intelligence, effort, or subject knowledge. Many students know what they need to do, yet struggle to consistently plan, organize, prioritize, initiate tasks, manage their time, or follow through on responsibilities.
These challenges often stem from deficits in executive functioning—the mental processes that help us regulate behavior, manage information, and accomplish goals.
We offer two distinct forms of executive function support: Academic Executive Function Support and Executive Function Coaching. While both focus on strengthening executive functioning skills, they differ in their goals, structure, and approach.
What Are Executive Functions?
Executive functions are the cognitive skills that help us:
-
Plan and prioritize
-
Organize materials and information
-
Manage time effectively
-
Sustain attention
-
Initiate tasks
-
Monitor progress
-
Adapt to challenges
-
Regulate emotions
-
Solve problems
-
Follow through on commitments
These skills impact virtually every area of life, from completing homework and studying for exams to managing responsibilities, achieving goals, and developing independence.
Students with ADHD, learning differences, anxiety, giftedness, or simply developing executive functioning skills often benefit from explicit instruction and support in these areas.
Academic Executive Function Support
Best For:
Students who need support applying executive function skills directly to their academic responsibilities.
What It Looks Like
Academic Executive Function Support is integrated into tutoring sessions and focuses on helping students successfully navigate the demands of school.
This support is highly individualized and directive. Rather than discussing executive functioning in theory, we teach and apply executive function strategies within the context of a student’s actual coursework, assignments, and academic goals.
During sessions, we may:
-
Break large assignments into manageable steps
-
Create study plans for quizzes and exams
-
Develop systems for tracking assignments and deadlines
-
Strengthen note-taking and study skills
-
Improve reading comprehension and annotation strategies
-
Teach planning and prioritization techniques
-
Support long-term projects and essays
-
Build organizational systems for binders, backpacks, and digital files
-
Address procrastination and task avoidance
-
Develop routines for independent work
Our Goal
Students leave sessions having made meaningful progress on current assignments while simultaneously building the executive functioning skills necessary for long-term academic success.
Executive Function Coaching
Best For:
Middle school students, high school students, college students, and young adults seeking to strengthen executive functioning skills beyond academics.
What It Looks Like
Executive Function Coaching is a collaborative process focused on helping individuals develop the habits, systems, and self-awareness necessary to navigate life more effectively.
While academics may be discussed, coaching addresses broader areas of personal growth and development, including:
-
Goal setting
-
Time management
-
Habit development
-
Personal accountability
-
Motivation
-
Productivity systems
-
Self-advocacy
-
Decision-making
-
Emotional awareness
-
Life transitions
-
College readiness
-
Workplace preparation
Our Approach
Through coaching, clients learn to:
-
Identify patterns that are helping or hindering progress
-
Create realistic goals
-
Develop sustainable routines
-
Build systems that support follow-through
-
Increase self-awareness and personal responsibility
-
Strengthen confidence and independence
Unlike tutoring, coaching is less focused on completing specific assignments and more focused on helping individuals develop the skills necessary to manage themselves effectively over time.
Our Executive Function Philosophy
At Freitas Tutoring, our executive function support is grounded in research, individualized assessment, and practical application.
We recognize that executive functioning challenges look different for every student. A strategy that works well for one learner may not be effective for another. Because of this, we tailor our support to each student’s unique strengths, challenges, goals, and learning profile.
When appropriate, we review educational documentation to better understand a student’s needs, including:
-
Neuropsychological evaluations
-
Psychoeducational assessments
-
IEPs
-
504 Plans
-
School reports
-
Teacher feedback
These materials provide valuable insight into how a student learns and help us develop targeted strategies that support meaningful growth.
Our approach draws from respected leaders in the field of executive functioning, including the work of Dr. Peg Dawson and Dr. Richard Guare, as well as current research in educational psychology, learning science, coaching methodologies, and executive skills development.
Rather than focusing solely on weaknesses, we seek to identify and leverage a student’s strengths while systematically developing the executive skills necessary for greater independence and success.
What Makes Our Approach Different?
Many students receive help only after academic struggles have become significant. We believe executive function support is most effective when it is proactive, individualized, and skill-focused.
Our work goes beyond helping students complete assignments. We teach students how to:
-
Plan effectively
-
Prioritize responsibilities
-
Manage time realistically
-
Initiate challenging tasks
-
Sustain attention
-
Monitor their own progress
-
Develop organizational systems
-
Advocate for themselves
-
Build independence and confidence
Our ultimate goal is not to make students dependent on support, but to equip them with the tools, strategies, and self-awareness needed to navigate challenges independently.
Whether we are helping a middle school student manage increasing academic demands, a high school student balance rigorous coursework, or a college student prepare for greater independence, our focus remains the same:
To help students develop the skills, confidence, and habits necessary to become increasingly capable learners, effective problem-solvers, and responsible young adults.
Comprehensive Executive Function Assessment Review
For families seeking a deeper understanding of their child’s executive functioning profile, we offer review of neuropsychological evaluations, psychoeducational assessments, IEPs, and 504 Plans.
This service allows us to identify executive function strengths and areas for growth, understand how a student’s learning profile impacts daily functioning, and develop personalized recommendations that can be implemented during tutoring or coaching sessions.
